Potty Training

Potty training your puppy can be difficult. Here is a schedule and some ideas to make it easier.

Take your puppy outside:

  • Once they wake up in the morning.

  • Once they wake up from a nap.

  • Once you get home from being gone.

  • Once they eat their food.

  • Once they drink water.

  • After they have been playing with their toys.

  • After you have done some training with them.

Here are some questions to ask yourself:

  • Does your puppy go potty or poop once or twice when going outside? If it is twice, make sure that your puppy does go potty or poop twice when you take it outside.

  • Did your puppy go potty or poop when you did go outside? If not, return inside for 1- 5 minutes and take the puppy outside again. Keep repeating this process until your puppy goes outside.

Here are some tips for potty training your puppy.

When your puppy goes to the bathroom, reward it immediately and give them a treat when done.

Tell your puppy a cue such as “outside,” or “go potty,” etc.

Always take your puppy out the same door to go outside every time. This way, your puppy will have a routine.

Try to take your puppy to the same area in the yard every time it goes to the bathroom. If you have a fence, you can let the puppy go outside. Watch your puppy and reward it once it goes to the bathroom.

Another thing you can do is hang bells on or near the door. Teach your puppy to ring the bells whenever it needs to go outside. This will be a helpful tool for your puppy to let you know when it needs to go outside.

If you find an accident, clean it up. Do not punish your puppy for having an accident. This is not going to be very productive.

If you catch your puppy having an accident, try to get it outside immediately to finish going.

Lastly, when your puppy is young, take it outside every hour. Then you can increase it to every two hours and so on.
