Chewing and Teething

Puppies like to chew on stuff, especially when they are about to lose their puppy teeth. Most puppies lose their teeth between 5 and 7 months old.
I recommend buying some good chew toys for your puppy, such as hard rubber or plastic toys. Nyla bones are also great for puppies to chew on. Kong also makes lots of good, sturdy chew toys for puppies.
Let’s talk about what to do if your puppy is chewing on something that it shouldn’t be. For example, if your puppy really likes household items like shoes, trade the item for a toy or a treat so that you can get the item away from your puppy. Teaching your puppy to “drop it” is useful when it has something in its mouth that it should not have.
Limiting your puppy’s access to certain areas in the house is also a good idea so it cannot sneak off and chew on something it is not supposed to chew. If your puppy gets too crazy and chews on lots of stuff, you can always put it in the crate for a little timeout. Then, after a few minutes, let it back out.
Remember, you can redirect your puppy's attention from inappropriate chewing to more suitable activities. Offering a chew toy, a bone, or even some treats can be a great way to shift their focus. Additionally, getting your puppy to sit or lie down can help them calm down and focus on something other than chewing.
Puppies chew for various reasons, and understanding these can help you manage their behavior. It could be due to teething, boredom, tiredness, a desire for attention or play, or even hunger. By recognizing these triggers, you can better address your puppy's needs.
